A bumpy afternoon

Saturday, September 27

Friday night was quite noisy, with the little waves stirred up by the wind tapping and slapping against Braesail’s stern right behind our heads in the aft cabin—an interesting percussion recital that was not very soporific! Neither of us slept very much or very well, and our morning tasks were not performed with alacrity! We left the boat a bit before 11 am to carry bags of garbage and recyclable materials to the top of the ramp and then to hike into town so that Walt could keep his appointment with Doc the Barber for a haircut. Skies were mostly clouded, but the air was mild, and I spent some time in the lovely topiary garden we’d visited on Friday while waiting for Walt to be shorn.

Before shopping at the nearby “No Frills” market to replenish our supplies, we popped into a wonderful bakery where I bought a chewy pretzel and Walt chose an almond croissant. After filling two large shopping bags at the market, we trudged back down the hill to the government dock, admiring the murals along the way.

By this time, the sun had decided to visit, nicely warming Braesail’s cockpit and main cabin, and the wind had risen and was blowing from the direction in which the boat’s bow was facing, making the sea somewhat choppy. With the boat bouncing up and down and around, napping, reading, and writing became rather challenging; Walt had monthly statements to produce for our condo association members and needed to fill Braesail’s water tanks, and I had email to deal with and a blog-post to write, so it was slow-going, but we managed to complete our tasks as a fine, misty rain began to dampen the docks.

After a soup-and-snacks supper, we caught up on our German exercises and email-reading, watched sailing and cooking videos (as is our habit), and were pleased that the wind was diminishing, giving us hope for a better sleep. We’d walked some four miles on Friday and only about two today, but we were more than ready for rest!
