In the Cove

Thursday, May 8, 2025

We spent a quiet, leisurely morning and early afternoon munching bagel halves smeared with cream cheese and topped with thinly-sliced salmon and fresh dill sprigs, working on our DuoLingo German lessons, reading, dealing with email, and napping (my favorite sleeping spot is one of the cushioned side-benches in the cockpit, which serves as our toasty “sun porch” on bright days). Since it appeared that the wind had decided to spend most of its day lazing about in its sky-bed, we left Blind Bay, on the north side of Shaw Island, under diesel power at about 3:30 pm and motored around to the opposite side of the island, arriving in broad, inviting Indian Cove at about 5 pm. As I always do, I loved looking at the island scenery: the rugged shores, cliffs, and outcroppings; the fluffy, forested slopes and the green velvet meadows; the bunches of buttery broom blossoms bursting out of stony crevices; the small, gravelly “pocket beaches” edged with driftwood and creamy-flowered madrona trees; and the houses of all sizes, styles, and ages that gaze down from bluffs and out over the water.

We dropped anchor in large, open Indian Cove, with its long, curving white-sand beach backed by thick green woods and a small number of houses, as the only boat present (we are always happy when we have an anchorage, large or small, all to ourselves!).

Various boat and computer tasks; more reading; supper preparation, consumption, and clean-up; and some accounting work for our Condo Association (Walt) and some journal-writing (Lorelette) occupied our evening as the sun melted away behind the hilltops, ferries chugged across the water and set Braesail rocking, and the fattening moon peered into the window of Braesail’s main cabin. Time for bed after a relaxing day!
