A “sluggish” day in Prevost Harbor

Monday, December 30, 2024

After a VERY dark, quiet night, Walt and I spent a tranquil day at the dock in Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island. Clouds found the harbor a relaxing place to be as well, and hung about throughout the day. We filled our time in our usual ways with reading, writing, snacking, computer work, French, a video or two, and (in my case), deleting over 500 fund-raising emails and doing a great deal of praying for friends, family, the earth and all its creatures, and all those striving, often in extremely dangerous circumstances, to protect the especially vulnerable and to make the world a better place.

Since the weather was mild and dry, I spent a lovely hour meandering along the shores of Prevost Harbor and of Reid Harbor on the other side of a “saddle” that separates the two bodies of water. I strolled past some fine campsites, through the forests along the tops of the bluffs, up to an odor-free composting toilet (which I use each time we visit Stuart Island), down to a black-gravel beach (the water, when I dipped my hand into it, felt not much colder than the air–perhaps around 45 F.). I found mushrooms of different sizes and colors, various other fungi, gray-green lichens, a tiny flower or two, and vast , plush carpets of emerald moss draped over rocks, logs, and trees. I also observed a slug sliming slowly across the dead leaves littering the forest floor.

The slug–that’s how I feel on some days, especially as I look at 2025.
One of the many nice campsites on the Prevost Harbor shore. I love the making of a long and a huge fallen tree root into seats!

Walt napped while I wandered–he doesn’t walk because he runs out of energy so quickly. Tomorrow we will leave for Deer Harbor on Orcas Island around 11 am.
