Visiting Sagres’ new home

Ashore at the Union SteamShip Co. Marina in Sung Cove, Bowen Island

Another six hours of motoring through quiet, windless, foggy, drizzly weather took Braesail’s crew from Pender Harbour to the excellent Union SteamShip Co. Marine Resort in Snug Cove on Bowen Island, a relatively short distance from Vancouver. Sagres, the 27-ft. sailboat owned by Martin and Hans, and presently moored at the Mosquito Creek Marina in Vancouver, will be moved by her owners to a slip in the Union SteamShip Co. Marina in May, following the very unwelcome and thus-far-largely-unexplained closure of the Mosquito Creek Marina by its owners, and Martin and Hans were eager to explore their boat’s new home.

Hans took the helm and I kept him company in the cockpit, swabbing moisture from the insides of the windows with a squeezable Swedish dishcloth and watching for floating sticks and logs. As it had on several previous days, a small electric fan suction-cupped to the main cabin top and aimed at the front windscreen helped to keep the helmsperson’s field of forward vision satisfactory.

Karen had not been sleeping well for several nights and was suffering considerable jaw, neck, and back pain, and so she decided to take the ferry from Bowen Island to Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver and then return to her home by bus. After her departure (following the sharing of a delicious English Christmas pudding, given to me by Karen, and topped with hard-sauce made by Martin), Brasail’s remaining four crew members enjoyed a snug evening of reading and talking about future winter boat excursion possibilities.
